The rest of last night was quiet. Eerily quiet. The calm before the storm. I’m about to head to lunch with Ivie when a prickle of premonition slides down my back. I have my suitcase in hand ready to head out the door, but something stops me short. My doors are still locked, and the alarm is still set. I rise up on my tiptoes to peer out my peephole and see Taylor, looking wired, standing on my doorstep. He hasn’t knocked or rang the doorbell. He’s just standing there, quietly, as if waiting for me to open the door and be caught unaware.

I drop back down, covering my mouth to quiet any sound, even my breathing, which might alert him of my presence. I squeeze my eyes shut and a tear tracks down my cheek. I knew he’d come for me, but I didn’t think it would be this soon.

Panic and the need to run right now consume me. He begins to knock on the door, and I flinch. I search the room for something, anything to defend myself. Before I can move to grab the nearest object that catches my eye, which happens to be a large, heavy duty wooden ladle I got for decoration instead of actual use, my phone rings and it’s on loud. I grab the ladle and put it behind my back, squeezing tightly.

“I know you’re in there, Lucy. It’d be better for everyone if you let me in now,” he says quietly so he doesn’t alert the neighbors, but loud enough I hear the venom dripping off his tongue.

I find my voice and try to sound as calm as possible, “Taylor, I already told you to leave me alone. It’s over and I don’t want you here.”

A cruel laugh sounds through the door. “Lucy, I already told you, you’re mine. And I will remind you since you seem to have forgotten.” He starts to knock harder. I can tell he’s losing any patience he came here with. I’m still standing in the same spot, ladle in one hand and phone in the other.

My soul is shaking with fear. I squeeze my eyes shut once more as I curse myself for trying to do this alone. How could I be so stupid? My thoughts shift to Tate. I could try to call him or send him a text, but he’ll get here too late. I can’t call Ivie because she can’t put herself in danger, she’s pregnant. I’m still scared to call the police because I know what it will cause for me. They’ll want to help, but in the long run it’ll only make things worse, whether they intend for that to happen or not.

“Shit.” I say under my breath. I quickly bring up Tate’s number and hit call before I hear glass shatter in my bedroom. He broke through the window. I hear Tate’s deep voice answer and
